Both the satellite constellation and the satellite signal graph display visible
satellites and their number (assigned by the Department of Defense).
GPS Accuracy
This screen will display GPS accuracy, in the lower-left corner of the screen,
in feet or meters (according to the preference you have set). GPS accuracy is
represented on the map by a circle with a radius equal to the GPS accuracy,
allowing the user to see a representation of their accuracy in relation to
their map scale. The accuracy of the Earthmate GPS PN-20 is +/- 10 meters.
Battery Indicator
The battery indicator is a graphic representation of the current available
battery power.
To Disable GPS
There are many features on the Earthmate GPS PN-20 that do not require a GPS
fix. You can turn off the GPS connection using the Disable GPS option in the
Satellites menu.
The Map Page
If a 2-D or 3-D fix is obtained, the Map Page displays the map
data available for your current GPS location. If a GPS fix cannot be obtained,
the location of your last GPS fix displays on the map.
Map Data
Earthmate GPS PN-20 comes standard with a base map showing high-level world and
U.S. coverage. The base map cannot be removed from memory.
There are several data types compatible with the Earthmate GPS
PN-20:
- » Topo USA Maps
- » USGS 7.5-Minute Quad Maps
- » B&W DOQQ Aerial Imagery
- » Sat-10 Color Satellite Imagery
- » DeLorme U.S. Street Maps
- » NOAA Nautical Charts
- » High-Resolution Color Aerial Imagery
The Compass Page
The Compass Page provides a graphic representation of a
traditional floating needle compass. It displays differently depending on if
you are navigating (following a route) or tracking. The compass rotates so that
the heading is always up. If you are navigating, the compass displays a bearing
arrow, which points in the direction of the next stop in the route.
The Trip Info Page
The Trip Info Page contains eight information fields that occupy
the entire screen (three information fields display if the Earthmate is in
large-text mode). Each field is customizable with one of the many available
information field options.
The Find Page
You can use the Find button (the button that displays with a
magnifying glass) to search for addresses, roads, cities, waypoints,
coordinates, and more. There are two Find search options:
-
» Find Near Map Center
Use the Find Near Map Center search option to search for categories of
information (such as geographic features, waypoints, points of interest, etc.)
near your current map center. The number of search results returned is based on
the amount of search results available (not on distance). Find Near Map Center
searches stop after 200 search results are found.
-
» Find By Name
Use the Find By Name search option to search for a specific location, such as a
specific address, point of interest, etc. To narrow your search results, you
can choose either the Contains or Begins With option to search for results that
contain or begin with certain character(s).
The Waypoints Page
You can use the Mark button (the button that displays as a push
pin) on the Earthmate GPS PN-20 to mark a waypoint at your current GPS location
(or at the current map center/cursor position if panning). Once a waypoint has
been added, you can customize the waypoint name, coordinates, and comments. The
device will store up to 1000 waypoints in internal memory.
The Routes Page
There are many ways to create routes on the Earthmate GPS PN-20.
You can create a route:
-
» From your current GPS location to a waypoint
-
» From your current GPS location to a Find search result
-
» Between two waypoints
-
» Between two Find search results
-
» Between a waypoint and a Find search result
Once you have created a route, you can view its directions, edit
the route, delete the route, and more. The device will store up to 50 routes in
internal memory.
Routing is possible for both walking and in-vehicle situations,
using either the direct or road routing settings. On-device routing for road
routes should be used for fairly short routes, with longer routes best
generated on the desktop in advance and transferred to the GPS. The on-device
road routing is fine for cross-town and in-state routes and includes an audible
beep warning before each turn, as well as the ability to recalculate routes
when you stray off course.
The Tracks Page
Earthmate GPS PN-20 is set to record GPS tracks by default. That
means that the device will create a track (“breadcrumb trail”) of your travels
until you turn recording off.
The Tracks Page lets you save, clear, or follow the current
track, or view/follow an existing track. The device will store up to 10 track
logs (with a 10,000 point limit each) in internal memory.
The Sun-Moon Page
Use the Sun/Moon Page to view the sunrise/sunset and
moonrise/moonset information as well as the moon phase information for your
current GPS location. The current date and time also display at the top of the
screen.
The Tide Page
Use the Tide Page to view high and low tide information based on
a specific time, date, and tide station.

Backpacker Magazine (March 2008)
"This compact unit delivers the most accurate, high-resolution track logs we've seen in a handheld GPS...the PN-20 has the best details and onscreen maps around. Download super-detailed topo, street, and aerial maps onto the 1GB memory card."
4-Wheel and Off-Road Magazine (September 2008)
"The PN-20 comes in a complete kit so the purchase of additional mapping isn't necessary. The PN-20 is easy to use for those of us who aren't technically inclined. The coolest part of the PN-20 is the unit's ability to download different types of detailed mapping. It shows multiple views in mapping or imagery form of the same GPS location, making this little handheld an extremely comprehensive navigational tool. The unit can also track your travels with breadcrumbs for future reference and navigation."
Army Times
"Priced at just under $370, software included, with a host of features usually reserved for pricier GPS models, it might just replace whatever you're using now."
The N.Y. Times & International Herald Tribune
"Off-road, where there are no pre-mapped tracks, most hand-held GPS
systems show your current coordinates, along with major landmarks like
streams and mountains, and keep track of the paths you have followed.
They don't tell you what the terrain is like, or what is beyond the next
hill or bend.
But the DeLorme Earthmate GPS PN-20 knows, displaying topographical maps
- with elevation profiles, campgrounds and trails as well as streets and
highways - as realistic 3-D flyover simulations, or as bird's-eye aerial
or satellite views showing landmarks.
The DeLorme Topo USA DVD software, with topological and road maps of
the United States and major-highway maps of the world, is included in
the $370 price of the PN-20. Roads can be superimposed on topological
maps and aerial imagery downloaded from the Web and stored in a
75-megabyte user memory or optional SD cards up to 2 gigabytes. The
2.2-inch, daylight-readable display can show trip details, compass
headings, rising and setting times of the sun and moon, and local tide
schedules."
PC World
"What separates the PN-20 from the crowd is its ability to store and display topographic, aerial, and satellite images…the PN-20 is a fine navigation device. I found its color screen exceptionally easy to see in bright sun …Exchanging maps, waypoints, track details, and other mapping information between the PN-20 and the Topo USA application is a snap …The PN-20 should appeal to kayakers, hikers, hunters, mountain bikers, and other outdoor-sport enthusiasts."
National Geographic Adventure Magazine, May 2007
"Think Google Earth for the palm of your hand."
About.com
"The DeLorme Earthmate PN-20 is an outstanding handheld GPS receiver, and when coupled with DeLorme's Topo USA mapping software and downloadable datasets, it becomes a very robust and useful resource for those who work or play outdoors."
Most Innovative Handheld GPS of 2007
GPSTrackLog.com
" Finally, a GPS that displays aerial photos. The DeLorme Earthmate GPS PN-20 does just that, and displays USGS topo maps too. It is incredibly cool to be carrying a GPS that shows your position on an aerial photo."
Off-Road Magazine, May 2007
"The GPS PN-20 is as state-of-the-art as you can get."
Included Map Comparison
B. Shelley (new GPS customer)
"What a delight the PN-20 has been -- and thanks for posting those map
comparison shots. They
brought back all of those memories of why this is my first GPS.
I have wanted to invest in a handheld GPS for a couple of years or more.
Garmin and Magellan seemed to be the most likely choices, but after
downloading their user manuals and checking out the maps that could be
loaded, I just couldn't bring myself to spend the $$$.
Besides, I had an investment in DeLorme Topo USA software -- I've had
all of the last 4 versions. The maps available to load onto the Garmin &
Magellan handhelds were pathetic compared to the T3/4/5/6 maps I was
used to studying while planning hiking expeditions out in mountains and
deserts of the San Diego east county.
Thanks so much for a great product with unsurpassed support."
Earthmate GPS PN-20: A New Breed of GPS
GPS Review.Net
"The DeLorme PN-20 represents a new breed of GPS devices. I’ve been waiting a long time for a GPS device to show me not only a map with my current position, but show my position on aerial photography and satellite imagery. Think of this new type of GPS as having Google Earth, GPS enabled, in your pocket.
Upon starting up the device the first thing I noticed was that the screen is very bright. The screen is a similar overall size to that of other handheld GPS devices with a resolution of 176x220 pixels. I didn’t have any trouble viewing the display in bright sunlight conditions.
The map page is where all of the action happens on this GPS. You can choose if you want to view Aerial Photography, USGS Topo maps, DeLorme Topo maps, or Satellite imagery. There is also a base map which displays major roads of the entire world. (Nice!) You can also pick which order you would like to layer the maps if your highest priority type of map is not available in the current view.
Overall, this is a fantastic device and it leads the way in a new breed of GPS devices which can display aerial photography and satellite imagery. For people who have dreamed about having a Google Earth type product in a handheld device.... this is it.
Lots of people often ask me “what do you do with all of the GPS devices after you’ve tested them?” Some I sell, some are on loan from the manufacturer and some I keep. I’m keeping my Earthmate PN-20."
Overland Journal (Fall 2007)
"When you think about the amount of information stored inside this little device, it boggles the mind. The qualities I appreciate most about the DeLorme products are their cohesive capabilities and well-rounded features."
S. Hardy (customer)
"I have about 20 hrs. of experience with the new DeLorme Earthmate GPS PN-20 but what may be of interest to you all is the fact that I have owned and used a Magellan Explorist 500 and I currently own a Garmin 60Cx.
DeLorme is equally as sensitive and accurate as the Garmin. Inside my computer room on the second floor of a wood frame house I regularly get nine sats and WAAS w/DeLorme. The DeLorme buttons are crisp and feel solid. My 60Cx buttons are okay but occasionally the direction rocker doesn't want to scroll right and the on/off button is not easy to use.
As far as maps go, now there is where the real difference is noticed. I have available 10-meter color sat maps, USGS topo quads, 1-meter aerial map as well as DeLorme's Topo USA w/updated street info, etc. When I zoom into a 1-mile scale I see my location on the 10-meter color sat map, at .25 miles I see streets, at 160 feet I see the 1-meter aerial map. I can change the order of map preference around, include or not certain map types, etc. One of the biggest beefs I had with both Magellan and Garmin was their lousy topos. Now I have 7.5-minute USGS scanned maps.
When I go into the field, off route so to speak, I will be carrying the DeLorme."

"Great signal retention, fast acquisition times, and both long-distance and close-up views of hiking and jeep trails are a plus."

"I had mine out on its first backpacking trip this weekend also, and it worked great! We got hit with an unexpected snowstorm (was supposed to be maybe an inch in the late afternoon of the last day, but it started snowing a 8 am and totalled 4-5 inches by 1 pm) and I was able to use the maps on the PN-20 to find an easier, quicker hike out. Then, when we got back to the cars and had difficulty making it over some of the hills, I was able to look at the topo and plot the flattest road route out and we finally made it home. The PN-20 is the closest I have found to a perfect handheld GPS for backpacking. It puts the power of the best topographic software in your hand."

"I live, work and play in a large rural county that has a plethora of year round activities. These include mountain biking, rails to trail biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, etc.
I work at the 911 center and with all these trails we get many many people that use them through out the year. Using the PN-20, I have been able to track (and gather the mile posts) for the Great Allegheny Passage (part of the rails to trail system) and place that track and mile posts onto our CAD map. We also have a major 70 mile hiking trail in our county that I have been able to hike and track (50 miles done so far) and this will also go onto our CAD map. Tracking with the PN-20 has been very accurate and works well with our mapping system. Having accurate data can and will save lives."

"The PN-20 has now replaced the Palm PDA for GPS functions for navigating routes in the car and for hiking. In our car, even a small laptop only works when the passenger's seat is empty or in the back seat. I've found that the PN-20 does not need to be "on the dash" up next to a window to get a decent and consistent signal. It works great anywhere in the car, even in the floorboard. It is so light that the regular cloth Velcro is more than enough to hold it securely. Because it doesn't need to be as close as possible to the windshield, I can put it anywhere that I can easily glance at the screen. Speaking of the screen, it is so bright that it doesn't have to be run at full bright, and I haven't had any problems with sun glare washing out the PN-20 screen like it does on my Palm. Although the screen is smaller, it has much higher resolution and makes the map and info data much easier to see with a quick glance than with the Palm. The battery life is so good that I wouldn't even consider plugging it in unless it was an all day trip; it just isn't necessary. With my Palm, I was plugged in for anything over half an hour, since Bluetooth drains batteries quickly."

"I just got back from a 89-mile, 6hrs & 48 min jeep trek using my PN-20 GPS. I was looking for old mines to pan the area around them & fill buckets of dirt for power sluicing back home from any gossan outcroppings or veins of quarts thrusting up or thru the mountain
washes. I am very pleased with the out-of-the-box performance with this unit. Main default settings are very good with lots of foresight on ease-of-user interfacing with the device while in motion.
The GPS is sturdy. The screen & backlight viewed either in direct sunlight or darkness, very easy on old eyes. The button controls are basic yet highly functional straight-forward & crisp. I had mostly WAAS connections on almost all satellites on average at least 10 satellites. This is indicated by the bar strength being blue in color.
The PN-20 default settings were all that I required. I could set a waypoint by a dedicated button, save & view just press Enter button. The PN-20 in default mode recorded my whole trip with tracking well before I thought up the ideal to save my trip.
Got home read the instructions on how to save recorded gps tracking as a route. It was painless to do so, plainly executed from the buttons on the face of the GPS.
The AA akaline batteries are lasting about 1 almost 1.5 days. The page button easily allowed me to view: satellite positions, battery strength, satellite signal strength map page I got very good detail of washes & even offroad trails/roads compass page shows heading GPS, lat & long, & speed trip page shows overall trip data.
We drove in during the day & had to drive back thru a maze of washes at night. I was able to lead back navigating by the tracking trail that we had entered from earlier in the day. I did not know this area and it was by the seat of my pants & the GPS performace that made me look really good to others in the group. I had the PN-20 set for a 15-sec backlight on time when a key waspressed it worked great.
I had wanted to use the aerial gunnery photos but I had not downloaded that data yet but will do so, so that my tracking will be displayed on those photos on the GPS in real time!!!
This was my first prospecting outting with a GPS. I took no paper maps since all were on the GPS anyway. Did not need the map as I could zoom out the GPS & more map area was presented."

"Well, I'm back from my first trip with the PN-20, and I love it! Boy, sure does have a lot of features. I can't read the book beforehand and absorb all of it. Have to learn by doing and there were things of which I wasn't aware, and I failed to do some things that I should have. But, I'll learn more each time that I go out."

"The rubbery back panel of the PN-20 does a great job of keeping the unit from sliding around on the dash. My Garmin, OTOH, has a tendency to go flying from one side of the dash to the other while driving around around corners, if I've forgotten to secure it."

"I was able to transfer the 3-D TopoQuads with the Section, Township and Range info to my PN-20. I've been trying to find a GPS that would do this exact work for a very long time and ya'll have hit a home run with this device."
