New with the PN-40 SE
Three-Axis Compass with Accelerometer
The PN-40 SE comes equipped with a three-axis electronic compass that can provide compass direction while stationery. The electronic compass is disabled when moving and the GPS heading is used. The PN-40 SE makes it easy to calibrate the compass for use in the field; simply follow the on-screen directions and you’re set to go.
DeLorme also includes an accelerometer, which in tandem with the compass provides the ability to figure the angle the GPS is tilted and determine an accurate compass reading regardless of how you are holding the PN-40 SE in your hand (tilted up, face down, etc.). Accelerometers measure the amount of static acceleration due to gravity; by sensing the amount of dynamic acceleration, the PN-40 SE can analyze the way the device is moving and make adjustments.
The PN-40 SE comes equipped with a barometric altimeter for providing accurate altitude readings. The barometric altimeter works in conjunction with the GPS to measure elevation when using auto calibration (if auto calibration is disabled, then the barometric altimeter is the only sensor providing elevation information). GPS by itself can only factor an approximate altitude reading, but in conjunction with the altimeter the PN-40 SE can provide accurate elevation data.
The Device Setup Page options let you modify the default
settings on the Earthmate GPS PN-40 SE such as the battery type, backlight
settings, and more.

Once you turn on the Earthmate GPS PN-40 SE, the Satellites Page
displays. It informs you of your current GPS status, the number of satellites
the Earthmate is acquiring data from, the signal strength, and the GPS accuracy
(only available when a 2-D or 3-D fix is obtained).
Satellite Constellation and Signal Graph
Both the satellite constellation and the satellite signal graph display visible
satellites and their number (assigned by the Department of Defense).
This screen will display GPS accuracy, in the lower-left corner of the screen,
in feet or meters (according to the preference you have set). GPS accuracy is
represented on the map by a circle with a radius equal to the GPS accuracy,
allowing the user to see a representation of their accuracy in relation to
their map scale. The accuracy of the Earthmate GPS PN-40 is +/- 10 meters.
Displays No Fix, 2-D, 3-D or 3-D W when WAAS is available. Appears in upper left corner.
Displays current GPS Time in upper right corner.
Elevation appears in the lower right corner based on current sensor settings.
The battery indicator is a graphic representation of the current available
To Disable GPS
There are many features on the Earthmate GPS PN-40 that do not require a GPS
fix. You can turn off the GPS connection using the Disable GPS option in the
The Compass Page provides a graphic representation of a
traditional floating needle compass. It displays differently depending on if
you are navigating (following a route) or tracking. The compass rotates so that
the heading is always up. If you are navigating, the compass displays a bearing
arrow, which points in the direction of the next stop in the route.
The Trip Info Page contains eight information fields that occupy
the entire screen (three information fields display if the Earthmate is in
large-text mode). Each field is customizable with one of the many available
information field options.
You can use the Find button (the button that displays with a
magnifying glass) to search for Waypoints, Points of Interest, Natural Features, Addresses, Coordinates, Streets & Trails, Cities, and more. There are two Find search options:
» Find Near Map Center
Use the Find Near Map Center search option to search for categories of
information (such as geographic features, waypoints, points of interest, etc.)
near your current map center. The number of search results returned is based on
the amount of search results available (not on distance).
» Find By Name
Use the Find By Name search option to search for a specific location, such as a
specific address, point of interest, etc. To narrow your search results, you
can choose either the Contains or Begins With option to search for results that
contain or begin with certain character(s).
You can use the Mark button (the button that displays as a push
pin) on the Earthmate GPS PN-40 SE to mark a waypoint at your current GPS location
(or at the current cursor position if panning). Once a waypoint has
been added, you can customize the waypoint name, coordinates, symbol, and comments. The
device will store up to 1000 waypoints in internal memory.
There are many ways to create routes on the Earthmate GPS PN-40.
You can create a route:
» From your current GPS location to a waypoint
» From your current GPS location to a Find search result
» Between two waypoints
» Between two Find search results
» Between a waypoint and a Find search result
Once you have created a route, view it on the map with the View option. The device will store up to 50 routes in
Routing is possible for both walking and in-vehicle situations,
using either the direct or road routing settings. On-device routing for road
routes should be used for fairly short routes, with longer routes best
generated on the desktop in advance and transferred to the GPS. The on-device
road routing is fine for cross-town and in-state routes and includes an audible
beep warning before each turn, as well as the ability to recalculate routes
when you stray off course.
Use the Sun/Moon Page to view the sunrise/sunset and
moonrise/moonset information as well as the moon phase information for your
current GPS location. The current date and time also display at the top of the
screen. Additionally, you can adjust the date and time to view sun-moon information for other times.

Earthmate GPS PN-Series Reviews
“DeLorme could make you think 'fun' is actually spelled 'GPS'”
Backpacker – Gear Guide (Fall/Winter 2009)
“The PN-30 hits a sweet spot in the balance between price, navigation-ready maps, and ruggedness... strong satellite signals even in dense underbrush.”
Outside Magazine (April 2009)
Backpacker Magazine (April 2009)
“Best onboard maps…it quickly locks onto satellites and collected accurate tracklogs even under stormy clouds and snow-covered spruce trees in Rocky Mountain National Park.”
Laptop Mobile Gadget Guide (Spring 2009)
“If you've got some backpacking or hiking in your future, check out the Earthmate PN-40 from the first name in outdoor GPS. The PN-40 gets excellent reception under even the densest forest cover.”
"The PN-40 is a huge, huge improvement over the PN-20 and is easy and great fun to use… with the new release of Parallels, even Mac people can use the unit with no extra hassles… I can't think of a unit that has given me so much fun and intellectual stimulation. I recommend it highly."
JPFreek Adventure Magazine (Jeep and outdoor adventure magazine), Winter 2008
“Power and speed, ease of use, and Topo 7 software make the new PN-40 the leader of the GPS pack by leaps and bounds.”
Detroit Free Press, December 4, 2008
"There are a batch of handheld GPS units on the market, but I've never seen one that is as fast as this new DeLorme model, has a clearer screen or offers such flexibility in downloading everything from topo maps to aerial photographs of the areas you'll be traversing.
Delorme offers unlimited downloads of topo maps, color aerial photos and other images for $29.95 a year.
The PN 40 has a dual processor and 32-channel capacity that allows it to update map screens and acquire satellites faster than any GPS I've tried, even traveling at 70 miles per hour on a highway.
The unit operates on two AA batteries or an optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery. I like the choice, because AAs are best for people who may spend a week far from any power source.
The PN 40 has a 500 megabyte internal memory and also accepts SD cards up to 32 GB, allowing the user to store lots of photographs and detail maps. Images are downloaded with a USB cable via the Internet using the Topo 7.0 software, and it's a simple process.
The PN 40… includes the DeLorme Topo 7.0 base map and detailed topographic maps for the entire country..."
“…the best handheld GPS with aerial photo capability, not to mention a huge additional range of functionality.”
“If you are a Garmin 60CSx owner (or similar) and have been waiting for something new, but were turned off by the Colorado or Oregon for some reason, yet needing to maintain the supreme accuracy the 60CSx offered, the PN-40 won’t likely disappoint you either. The PN-40 enjoys accuracy on par with the 60CSx and better than what I’ve experienced with the Colorado. It doesn’t have the big screen, but what is on the screen is better."
Cleveland Plain Dealer
“From DeLorme, the Earthmate PN-40 GPS comes with the 32-channel Cartesio chipset and a dual-core processor for surprising speed in finding satellites and downloading maps.”
“We used the PN-40 quite heavily on a trip to Death Valley. We test our gear very hard in the roughest conditions. When you throw fine sand and wind into the mix, that separates the really good gear. In this case, the PN-40 passed with flying colors.”
“The Earthmate PN-40 boasts an impressive feature list with killer software…locks on satellites mega fast for near instantaneous acquisition…it’s a rugged, reliable, and full-featured outdoor GPS anyone can appreciate.”
Earthmate GPS PN-40 Testimonials
workerofwood (DeLorme Earthmate GPS PN-40 Forum)
“The PN-40 held satellite lock in all conditions, and beat out the 60 in the toughest conditions (steep redwood canyons). It routinely put me on the spot correctly right off, only occasionally overshooting the position. It was VERY cool to be able to point that the cache would be behind the 3rd bush on the left as we approached (had hi-res maps loaded).”
Merge! (Groundspeak Forums)
"I just got the PN-40. It is AMAZING!!! Truly paperless. The maps are great. It's like I was using Google Earth as a GPSr. So different than any other geocaching experience I have had. I don't think the 60CSx is paperless. The PN-40 is. It auto-routes to the cache, and is SOOOOOOOOO accurate. I just love this PN-40.
I wholeheartedly recommend the PN-40. You will not be disappointed. Plus, the people at the DeLorme forums were SO helpful. They have helped me so much since I first found them about 2 weeks ago."
gps_dr (Groundspeak Forums)
"I've used the imagery on the PN-40 in the mountains to a big advantage. Being able to see the "birds-eye" view of the forest allowed me to pick out continuous logging cuts to make my travel so much easier than fighting dead-falls. Being able to see around or over the forest you are in can be great.
Mike (DeLorme GPS Blog comment)
"I started as a Magellan user in 2003 and have been a happy Garmin user the last 3 years. I have to admit the new PN-40 has more than intrigued me. I have owned a Garmin Colorado and now a Garmin Oregon 400T … for a seasoned geocacher (6000+ finds), they don’t compare to what I’m seeing with the PN-40."
Jennifer66 (DeLorme Forum post)
"The PN-40 has totally become an invaluable - and yes, serious - tool for my road trips in all of ways I needed it to be. Since travel photography is my passion, geotagging is among my top needs and it worked perfectly! Forget the American Express, don't leave home without the PN-40!"
Corey (DeLorme GPS Blog comment)
"That is some exciting stuff!... My only complaint was that it didn’t have an easier way to set up the geocaches or to mark them as found/ not found. You just totally took care of that little issue and added even more functionality than I’d hoped for!! You’re making it really hard to not buy one of these."
J. Weber (Amazon.com customer review)
"I had a chance to try the PN-40 extensively on a recent off-trail desert hiking trip. The unit performed flawlessly, and though I'm pretty picky about features, at the end of the week, I still didn't have a wish list.
Portable high resolution GPS has finally become reality. I really enjoyed my hiking trip, being able to plan complex routes in advance, and see exactly where I was when out in the backcountry or on trails. I was able to make some smart decisions while hiking when it was getting late and I needed to figure out a new way back out. It took years for my dream of a hand held GPS with high resolution maps to finally happen. I highly recommend the PN-40."
